CHASING CLOUDS AND LIGHT: Thomas and Lena Gushul were professional photographers in the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta during the first half of the twentieth century. The couple opened their first photo studio in East Coleman (“Bush Town”) in 1918. A second photo studio opened in Blairmore in 1922. Thomas and Lena Gushul worked together in their photo studios as a team, where they specialized in portraiture, wedding, commercial, and landscape photography. They were prolific photographers, amassing an extensive photographic collection consisting of tens of thousands of negatives and prints. The Gushul’s photographs are like windows into the past, revealing glimpses into the rich history of the Crowsnest Pass as it unfolded during the years they operated their photo studios. The photographs of Thomas and Lena Gushul displayed in this book represent a broad cross-section of their work and are among the finest images they produced. Every Gushul photograph tells a story, whether it’s of people, places, or events. The photographs presented within the covers of this book are sure to entertain, educate, captivate, and stimulate conversations and dialogue among those who peer inside. Other early photographers worked in the Crowsnest Pass before the arrival of Thomas and Lena Gushul. A bonus chapter includes information and photographs by these photographers.
